Heidelberg was our first adventure when we moved to Germany and it was a great time. It was founded in the late 1300's and was constructed along the scenic Neckar River. It is most famous for the castle that sits overlooking the village as shown in the picture above.
The Castle (Schloss) was constructed during the Roman occupation in the 17th century.
I've only been in country for two weeks, so my understaning of most the info availabe was limited. The castle played a big role in the 30 year war and also housed the King of Germany (Rupert of the Palatinate) in 1401
At the bottom of the castle is a famous statue known as, "Corn Madonna" who is holding a baby Jesus as he stabs a serphant with a spear at the base of the statue.
The town is easy to navigate if you can maintain awareness how to get back to the River and has three distinct crossings. The middle bridge is the old bridge that will lead you to the historical section of town. Left of the castle is dam that you can cross and watch the boat locks. Right of the castle is the new bridge which will take you to shopping and more modern restaurants/bars.
If you save the dam crossing for the trip back to town, you should take the path below the street to travel through a cool tunnel decorated with local art. ^_^ very cool.
